AI Robotics for Building the Future Society

We are engaged in the research and development of human-assist robots for caregiving and healthcare in response to an aging society. Additionally, we are conducting research and development on a multi-robot collaborative system that can be applied extensively, from assisting individuals to infrastructure maintenance, using multiple robots in a coordinated manner. Furthermore, we are working towards realizing robots capable of handling challenging flexible materials, conducting research and development on next-generation industrial robots to dramatically enhance productivity in clothing manufacturing lines, and proposing new manufacturing approaches through the research and development of next-generation 3D printing technologies.

Through these research and development efforts, we aim to integrate AI and robotics technologies, realizing AI robots and proposing a future society where coexistence with such AI robots is commonplace. To achieve this, we conduct interdisciplinary research not only from an engineering perspective but also involving fields such as psychology, robot ethics, and robot law.

The Hirata-Tamura Laboratory is affiliated with the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (Undergraduate) and the Robotics Program (Graduate School) at Tohoku University. While the Hirata Laboratory started in 2007, it underwent a transformation in 2016 with a new workspace. In 2020, Assistant Professor Tamura joined, and the research activities are now carried out at Aobayama Campus A-15 (Mechanical and Intelligent Systems Joint Building). Students from various fields such as control engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, and others gather, including a diverse group of students from both Japan and abroad.
